The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a piece developed with Ed Perkins for our duo The Raw and the Cooked. It is an atmospheric telling of an excerpt from the epic poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge featuring narration by me and improvised electronic sounds by both Ed and I.
The Raw and the Cooked are Jason Dixon and Ed Perkins, a duo of composers and improvisors. They exploit custom hardware & software, voices, texts, costumes, video and narratives in their atmospheric doom-laden performances, exploring the boundaries between "natural" and "crafted", "found" and "produced", "raw" and "cooked".
Improvising within strict pre-defined structures, the trio create carefully sculpted sound worlds in which they situate found texts, often touching on the darker side of life.
The Raw and the Cooked tell stories. They generate soundtracks to the experiences you have yet to visit. They are purveyors of extremely acatalectic eschatological musings.
